Coriander (Coriandrum Sativum)

Starting at: $2.65

Did you know that coriander and cilantro come from the same plant? Some varieties of cilantro are grown specifically for their seeds (sold as coriander) and some for their leaves (sold as cilantro). But they are both of the species Coriandrum sativum.

Most people find the citrus-y odor and taste of cilantro very pleasant. But a small percentage of the population has a genetic variance that causes cilantro to taste strongly of soap. As one might expect, this percentage is lowest in the populations that use cilantro (or coriander) widely, and higher in some others.

Coriander/cilantro has been found in some of the oldest archaeological sites (7000-6000BC), so its history is well established. It's used in cuisines all over the world now, from Asia to the Americas, in everything from chili to curries. It makes a great addition to green salads as well, if you have your own plants or buy it fresh.

We are trialing several varieties of cilantro/coriander at New Naturals this year, with the hope of being able to supply it from our own plantings. Check out our Facebook page and our newsletter for news on that front! Depending on current availability, our ground coriander comes from farms in either India or Egypt. It's packaged in 1-ounce glass jars, and in 2-ounce and 4-ounce standup pouches. All are large enough that you can dispense from them with standard measuring spoons.
