Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans)

Starting at: $5.50

Ah, nutmeg! We think of it now as a favorite ingredient of pumpkin pie filling and eggnog, puddings and baked desserts. But nutmeg may have spawned more conflict and bloodshed than all the other spices put together. In the 17th century, nutmeg was not just a spice, but a drug that the wealthy consumed for its hallucinogenic properties. Because of that, its value was far higher than if it had been only a tasty flavoring. Control over its cultivation resulted in years of war between the British and Dutch.

In 1667, the Dutch gave up the island of Manhattan in return for taking back the tiny island of Run, a nutmeg-producing island that the British had formerly controlled. This allowed them to keep their monopoly on the trade in nutmeg, and incidentally resulted in New Amsterdam being renamed New York. It wasn't until the French missionary and horticulturist Pierre Poivre smuggled nutmeg seedlings out of the Moluccas in 1769 that the Dutch lost their control of nutmeg. Poivre introduced the cultivation of nutmeg to Mauritius, and it eventually found its way across the ocean to Grenada and the West Indies. It is grown now across southeast Asia, primarily in India and Indonesia.

Our nutmeg makes a wonderful addition to a variety of desserts, beverages, holiday breads and confections. Check out our expanded recipe section for ideas.
