Cardamom is one of the most versatile spices in your cupboard, and one of the most expensive (exceeded in cost only by vanilla and saffron). But you don't need much! Just a tiny bit enhances beverages, desserts, holiday breads and spice mixes.

Cardamom Cardamom is native to India and Indonesia, but is now grown around the world. Each little green pod has two or three tiny black seeds in it, and for most of its history, the pods were split by hand to remove the seeds. Now it's done in most places with machinery, and then either sold as seed or ground into powder.

We love it in masala chai and hot chocolate, and also in Indian rice pudding. Cardamom is widely used in Swedish pastries, and even in meatloaf and breads. it's a traditional ingredient in Turkish coffee as well. So even though it's related to ginger, turmeric and the other spices commonly associated with Asian food, it has found a home in many countries' cuisines.

Packaged in 1-ounce glass jars that fit nicely on a pantry shelf, and also in 2 and 4-ounce stand-up pouches.
